Not of This World

We, as Christians, are not of this world. It isn’t our true home and when I see all the violence and death, sickness and disease and hatred that we face in this world because of sin, I am very grateful that this world is not our true home. In fact, there are many days when I long for my true home – heaven.

That is not to say that I have a death wish or anything like that, but this world is fallen and gets worse all the time because of sin. The closer I get to God, the more time I spend with him the more I long to be in his presence all the time.

Not of This World

In John 17:14-16  Jesus says, “I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.”

He also said in John 15: 19,

“If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.”

Yes, we live in this world temporarily, but it won’t last. It is only preparation for the next life. The best thing we can do in this life is to make our peace with God because there are only two options- eternal life with Jesus in heaven or eternal death in hell. Many people may not like to hear that, but it doesn’t change the truth.

Jesus said that:

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. no one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6.

There is no other way except Jesus.

I wrote this poem years ago when contemplating heaven:

A journey.
Preparation for the next,
Filled with joy and laughter.
But also pain and sorrow.
Beauty untold.
Majesty unfolding.
But still only a glimpse
Of our real, eternal home.
Always searching.
Always seeking.
A longing for something
You can’t define.
Contentment? Peace?
Real, unconditional love?
Heaven is our true home.
Jesus waiting with outstretched arms
To welcome us,
Hold us, love us- forever.
To lead us, teach us
Show us the way.
Streets of gold, our eternal mansion
He beckons us- come home.

Salt and Light

While we reside in this world, we are to be “salt and light” (Matthew 5: 13-16) and follow the example that Jesus gave us with his own life. God doesn’t want anyoneto be lost and he chooses to use us to share the good news with others through our own lives.

Not of this world

Although this world is temporary, it is our home for now and God has a purpose in each one of us being here. The question is whether we choose to let God use us for his glory and his purposes or not.

Our True Home

Revelation 21:1-7 gives a great picture of what heaven on earth will be like after he comes again.

“Then I saw ‘a new heaven and a new earth,’ for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death” or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’ He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’ Then he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’ He said to me: ‘It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars – they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.'”

Revelation describes the Holy City in shining brilliance with streets of gold, the foundation and walls made of precious jewels (see the rest of Revelation 21-22).

If it wasn’t for God’s grace in sending Jesus to die on the cross for our sins, we would all fall into the latter category of people being thrown into the lake of fire and we would deserve it. However, God made a way with Jesus and all we have to do in order to enjoy eternal peace and joy in heaven with God is to seek forgiveness and accept him as our Lord and Savior.

There is nothing we can do to earn it. It is a gift of grace from a loving but righteous and holy God. I am very glad that I am “not of this world” and this beautiful place will be my eternal home. However, while I am still here in this world, I seek to be a light in the darkness for anyone who will listen.
