In a previous post entitled Temples of the Holy Spirit, I outlined exactly what that means according to the Bible. Today, I want to expand on that topic and apply that to today’s world.
1Corinthians 6:19-20 says, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, who you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.”
In today’s society, we are exposed to chemicals of every sort just by breathing. They are in the air, our water, and our food supply. You can find them in beauty and personal care products, household cleaners and our medicine. Our food has been genetically modified and it’s very hard to know what the effects these chemicals and modifications are having on our bodies.
In Genesis 1:27-30, MEV it says,
“So God created man in His own image: in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves on the earth.’ Then God said, ‘See, I have given you every plant yielding seed which is on the face of all the earth and every tree which has fruit yielding seed. It shall be food for you. to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the air and to everything that creeps on the earth which has the breath of life in it, I have given every green plant for food.’ And it was so.”
God gave mankind a command to rule over “every living thing that moves on the earth.”
In Genesis 2:15, NIV God “took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”
Today, we have gone from taking care of the earth to playing God with it. Our society seems to think that they can improve on what God has already created. The truth, however, is that we are being slowly poisoned by genetically modified food and chemical additives to just about everything we eat.
For example, in a previous post, entitled “Why Wheat is Bad for You”, I highlight a book by Dr. William Davis called the Wheat Belly Cookbook. In it, he explains that the wheat of today is not the same wheat of biblical times. It has undergone hundreds of hybridizations and chemical alterations from how God originally created it.
“One type of wheat called Clearfield Wheat is a product of “hybridization”. It was created through “chemical mutagenesis” in which wheat seeds are exposed to a chemical called sodium azide (NaN3). This chemical is highly toxic to animals, bacteria, and humans. Small quantities will yield effects similar to that of cyanide. In fact, if it is accidentally ingested, the CDC advises not even performing CPR on the victim since the one doing the CPR could get exposed to the chemical also. The CDC also advises not disposing of any vomit in the sink because it can actually explode.” (quote from Wheat Belly CookBook By William Davis, M.D.)
It isn’t just wheat that is the problem today though.
Our meat is being cloned and genetically modified also and it isn’t usually labeled as to whether it is GMO or not.
Chemicals are found our produce, in pre-processed foods and in our water supply. They are in our cleaning products, plastic
They are in our cleaning products, plastic products and beauty products.
Chemicals such as:
Atrazine – found in the majority of corn crops and is a common contaminant in our drinking water. It is linked to breast tumors, delayed puberty, and prostate inflammation and some studies have linked it to prostate cancer.
Phthalates – Although, it is normal for over 50 billion of your cells to die daily, Phthalates can trigger what is known as “death-inducing signaling” in testicular cells which kills those cells earlier than they should be. They have also been linked to diabetes, birth defects in male reproductive systems, obesity and much more. They are commonly found in plastic containers, children’s toys and personal care products.
Perchlorate – is a component in rocket fuel and is found in much of our produce and milk. If you ingest too much, it can affect your thyroid function which regulates your metabolism because it competes with the nutrient iodine which is key for healthy thyroid function.
See: www. ewg.org for more information on these and other chemicals.
We have gone from taking care of ourselves, our planet, and our food and water supplies to poisoning ourselves and playing God instead of listening to God. The Bible holds many valuable truths to help us to live healthy, abundant, purposeful lives if we would only listen.
Dr. William Davis, M.D., has a new book out entitled Undoctored. In it, he goes beyond cutting wheat and grains out of your diet to showing you how to take total charge of your health. He reveals how big business controls the dietary recommendations of millions of people and how many people are given unnecessary prescriptions. He gives you a step by step program to eliminate unnecessary prescriptions, 42 different recipes, and tips on how to distinguish good medical advice from bad.
I highly recommend organic products whenever possible to help you avoid as many chemicals as possible. Make sure to read labels and if you don’t know what an ingredient is, chances are it’s something you shouldn’t be eating. Also, Pinterest has a lot of great DIY recipes for personal care products.
Although it is harder and harder each day to keep our bodies healthy and whole, it isn’t impossible. Our bodies are indeed temples of the Holy Spirit which means that is God inside of us. It is our responsibility to take care of our bodies to the best of our ability which means educating ourselves and making quality choices.
